One of the most exciting developments at BATC has been to expand our advocacy work under a new name: Housing First Minnesota. Our modern and comprehensive advocacy program continues to make great strides, so it was time to advance a more inclusive brand identity. We’d already become known at the legislature for our Housing First political activities, so expanding the Housing First name to encompass our new, broader activities locally and state-wide was the next step. Marketing & Communications
Our marketing activities are designed to bring prospective buyers to you while promoting new construction (whether building a new home or remodeling a current one) year-round. Our messaging is designed to appeal to our broad market with reasons why “new is better,” how “we build community” and “meet our family” where we showcase the real people who are building and remodeling homes every day.

ParadeofHomes.org is often our first introduction to tour-goers and online visitors interested in housing. With almost three-million pageviews and 350,000 unique users over the last year, we know it’s critical to successfully market your homes, products and services, as well as our industry. To that end, we’re getting ready to launch a whole new site designed to offer a more streamlined and engaging online experience. Our new data-management “back end” opened earlier this month for spring tour entries, while the full site will open with the spring Parade of Homes in mid-February. The new site is designed to be fully mobile, so the more than 50 percent of our visitors that view us on smart phone or tablet will get the same complete experience as those who visit via desktop. While our signature events are still the most cost effective way for you to meet more real buyers today, they also help us build a pool of future buyers for your pipeline. When people stop by during a tour, they may say they’re just looking for a new color to paint their bedroom, or what new lighting fixtures are on the market, but they’re also getting to see the advantages that new and newly remodeled homes offer. Then, when they are ready to make that move, they’ll know just which builder or remodeler they’ll contact first after touring for all those years!

Artisan Home Tour by Parade of Homes®
The four-year-old Artisan Home Tour has grown to become a truly recognizable brand. We saw a 56 percent growth in attendance this year, and have solidified our position as the premier high-end home tour by featuring only the most exceptional new and remodeled homes being built in the marketplace today. Our sponsors continue to support the tour, and we’ve been able to give the BATC Foundation $80,000 to support their good works.

MN Green Path
Green Path, a program of BATC-Housing First Minnesota, is a customized, realistic approach to building energy-efficient and sustainable homes. We all know that Minnesota homes are among the most energy-efficient durable homes in the United States. And we know that the next generation of homebuyers are more interested in energy and green building than previous generations. That makes MN Green Path a valuable tool to educate consumers and showcase the value of new and newly remodeled homes.
More than 11,000 homes have been Green Path tested or certified since we launched in 2012. And the NorthStar MLS showcases HERS scores and green certification in response to requests from BATC-Housing First Minnesota. Green Path, our Home Performance Reports and the HERS scores help prospective buyers understand the value of energy-efficient and green features, and why new and newly remodeled homes help them get what they want.

The goal of our modern, comprehensive advocacy program is to address local and state concerns to create a positive environment for our builders, remodelers and associates. Our five-person dedicated in-house team and leading contract lobbyists continue to make huge strides in a variety of areas, now, under the Housing First Minnesota banner. These include:
As the most visible portion of our advocacy program, BATC-Housing First Minnesota is led by a team of experienced in-house lobbyists and the leading land use attorney-lobbyist under contract. Our team has more than 75 years of cumulative lobbying experience, and our efforts have yielded tremendous success for our industry. We are cemented as the leading voice at the Capitol.
In 2017 we further enhanced our powerful regulatory affairs program with the hire of a full-time, established advocacy professional to manage the myriad of regulatory issues impacting our industry. We have seen positive outcomes in the NPDES permitting and Lead Paint RRP rulemaking processes, and we are positioned to drive the affordability message in future regulatory debates. This also expands our capacity to address local issues as well as our strong work with the state’s regulatory agencies.
Housing Industry News
BATC-Housing First Minnesota created Housing Industry News, a news publication that reaches over 13,000 statewide. It is received by housing industry professionals and others associated with the homebuilding industry.
Electoral Politics & Issue Advocacy
Since 2010 BATC-Housing First Minnesota has been deeply engaged in electoral politics to help elect housing champions. Our coordinated initiatives of independent expenditures, PAC, and issue advocacy campaigns are engineered by our professional staff with a full-time political engagement staff member and press secretary. Housing First is now established as a top three political group in the business community, and is the leading trade group in the electoral space. We are currently in the field interviewing all major candidates for governor.
BATC-Housing First Minnesota has formed a legal defense institute and is prepared to tackle cases that have impact within local communities and statewide. For example, NAHB has participated with BATC-Housing First Minnesota in two Amici efforts – regarding sprinklers and illegal roadway assessment fees.
The housing industry has rallied around our energy and strategic plan, and has engaged with time, talent and treasure.
BATC-Housing First Minnesota is a leading convener in the state among business and construction groups. On electoral politics, issue advocacy, legislative issues, regulatory issues, Housing Day at the Capitol and workforce development; we have led in creating coalitions to leverage the collective strength of the business community. We are particularly proud of our partnership with the Minnesota Association of REALTORS, which has resulted in our annual Housing Day at the Capitol, with attendance of over 600, and our Home Ownership Initiative, which brought key pieces of legislation to fruition in 2017.
Our dynamic communications team produces two weekly e-newsletters, with one containing significant advocacy information, and the second dedicated solely to advocacy issues. We post daily and manage a wide array of social media platforms to relay information on all of our activities, and we foster and maintain deep relationships with key members of the press.

Whether joining us at play or for more serious business, BATC’s event calendar provides plenty of opportunity to make industry connections. This year’s show at the Minneapolis Convention Center was a smashing success. BRS is one of the largest builder shows in the nation, and this year was no exception. Exhibitors loved the online booth booking system with its interactive floor plan, as well as the New Reveal – highlighting (online, in-print and on social) the new products/services that exhibitors had on display. Next year promises to be bigger and better than ever, with an all-new show-floor layout that promises to improve traffic and bring more people to every booth. Our vision as the leading voice for builders and remodelers continues to inform all of our communications efforts. Your charitable arm, the BATC Foundation, has done excellent work this year. Besides completing several important projects, the Foundation is in the process of reorganizing to better fulfill its mission of building heart in housing. They plan to continue their work with other charitable organizations while placing even more emphasis on veterans and the homeless.
Recently completed by the Foundation is a group home in St. Michael which houses four special-needs young men who love to cook and spend time in their kitchen. The home, managed by the St. Michael Foundation, is a typical residence that had several safety issues plus a very small kitchen. Build Partner, Minnesota Design and Construction, has enlarged the kitchen and dining area with an addition while updating the layout to make it much safer, especially for their blind resident.
